What the Apple TV is

The Apple TV 4K is a set-top box running tvOS, Apple's television operating system. It uses the same fast Apple silicon family as iPhones and iPads, which is why its interface never stutters and its video decoding is first-rate. It connects by Wi-Fi on every model, and the higher-tier wired configuration adds a Gigabit Ethernet port — a meaningful advantage for live sport.

Which apps run on it

• IPTV Smarters — the most familiar cross-platform player, available on the App Store and simple to set up with M3U or Xtream.
• iPlayTV — a well-regarded tvOS-native IPTV player with a clean guide.
• GSE Smart IPTV — another established App Store option with broad format support.
• No TiviMate — the enthusiast favourite is Android-only, so tvOS users pick from the App Store players above.

All of these take standard M3U links and Xtream Codes logins, so any subscription works. Performance: chip, codecs and Ethernet

This is the Apple TV's strongest suit. The Apple silicon chip handles H.264 and H.265/HEVC effortlessly and drives 4K HDR (including Dolby Vision) with excellent colour and motion. There is ample RAM, so guides and menus stay instant even with a large channel list. The wired model's Gigabit Ethernet is the reliability cherry on top: a hard-wired Apple TV is about as stutter-free as home IPTV gets.

Is the Apple TV right for you?

Choose the Apple TV 4K if you want the most polished, powerful box and you are already in the Apple world, and if you are happy using an App Store player rather than TiviMate. If value matters more, a Firestick 4K Max delivers most of the experience for far less; if TiviMate is non-negotiable, go Android TV. For picture quality and speed, though, the Apple TV is hard to beat.
