It is the least expensive way to turn any TV with a spare HDMI port into an IPTV setup, and it runs the two players most people use. What the Fire TV Stick is

The Fire TV Stick is a small streaming dongle from Amazon that runs Fire OS, a version of Android. It plugs into an HDMI port, draws power over USB, and connects by Wi-Fi (or Ethernet on the 4K Max with an adapter). Because Fire OS is Android-based, it runs Android IPTV players, which is why it punches well above its price for streaming.

Which apps run on it

• IPTV Smarters / Smarters Pro — available directly in the Amazon Appstore; the easiest install and the safest default.
• TiviMate — the favourite for its cable-style guide, favourites and recordings (Premium); runs well on Fire TV.
• Built-in Fire TV apps — Prime Video, plus the streaming apps you already use, sit alongside your IPTV player.
• Sideloaded players — if a player is not listed, the official Downloader app can install its official file. Only sideload legitimate apps.

Models and performance notes

Not all Sticks are equal. The base Fire TV Stick has the least RAM and can feel slow when the guide is large or several apps are open. The 4K and 4K Max add memory and a quicker processor, and the 4K Max is the one to buy for IPTV: it scrolls a big EPG smoothly, decodes 4K reliably, and — crucially for live sport — supports a wired Ethernet adapter, which is far steadier than Wi-Fi.

On codecs, current Sticks handle the common H.264 and H.265/HEVC streams that most IPTV uses, and the 4K models add 4K/HDR decoding. The limiting factor in practice is rarely the codec — it is memory on the cheapest Stick and Wi-Fi stability, both of which the 4K Max addresses.

Honest pros and cons

• Pro — cheapest way in. A capable IPTV device for the price of a couple of takeout meals.
• Pro — runs the best players. Both IPTV Smarters and TiviMate work natively.
• Pro — portable. Small enough to take to the cottage or a hotel with a TV.
• Con — limited RAM on the base model. Menus and large guides can lag; the 4K Max fixes this.
• Con — Wi-Fi first. Ethernet needs an adapter, and only the 4K Max supports it cleanly.
• Con — Amazon interface. The home screen pushes Amazon content around your apps.

Is the Firestick right for you?

Choose a Firestick if you want the lowest-cost, most portable way to run IPTV and you are happy with the Amazon interface. If you want the smoothest possible guide and native TiviMate recordings, an Android TV box is a step up; if you are in the Apple world, the Apple TV 4K is more powerful but pricier.
